ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

Auditions
Students who wish to perform with the Green Mountain Youth Symphony should be able to read music; and wind, percussion, and brass players should have been playing their chosen instrument for at least one year. The musician should audition with a polished piece, a scale of their choosing, and should expect to sight-read.  Violin and viola players who wish to audition for advanced placement should prepare a three-octave scale with at least 2 sharps or flats, and cellists auditioning for advanced orchestra placement should prepare a four-octave scale.

Tuition
Fees for 2010-2011 are:

Families with multiple students are eligible to receive a discount of 5% for the second child and 10% for the third and all subsequent children.

Tuition must be paid in full by the first rehearsal of the semester, unless other arrangements are made in advance. If the tuition is unpaid, members may not participate. You may make arrangements to pay tuition in two installments, with half due by the first rehearsal, by contacting Sarah Madru, Orchestra Manager.

Scholarships
Scholarships are available, and are granted on the basis of income and family size. To apply for a scholarship, families must complete an application form and return it to the GMYS along with a copy of their 2009 Federal Income Tax returns. For those who qualify for assistance, a scholarship will be offered to cover a portion of the cost of tuition. 

The Green Mountain Swing Scholarship Fund:
Green Mountain Swing, a Central Vermont jazz band, in memory of its longtime director Shep Resnik, is offering scholarships to current GMYS wind, brass, and percussion players to supplement private lesson fees.  GMYS will award three scholarships in the amount of $200 for the year on the basis of financial need and conductor recommendations.

Students must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for one of the scholarships made possible by Vermont Violins and Green Mountain Swing:

  • Current orchestra participant

  • Demonstrated financial need 

  • Intends to continue playing with the orchestra for the full year

  • Has received a recommendation from his/her GMYS conductor 

  • Will use the scholarship only for private lessons with an instructor proficient on his/her chosen instrument

Paul Perley Cellos Repertory Orchestra Scholarship:
Paul Perley Cellos is owned and operated by Paul & Melissa Perley of Berlin.  As cellists, music teachers and business people, Melissa and Paul have had a long time interest in music education and orchestra opportunities for the youth of our community.

Summer Music Camp
The Green Mountain Youth Symphony will offer two summer music camps in 2010:

  • A day camp (9am-3pm) at the Monteverdi Music School in Montpelier for beginning and intermediate young musicians, July 19-23, 2010

  • A residential music camp at Johnson State College for intermediate and advanced young musicians, August 8-14, 2010.

Residential Music Camp
The Green Mountain Youth Symphony will hold its residential music camp at Johnson State College from Sunday, August 8 - Saturday, August 14.

Intermediate and advanced student musicians will work privately with professional musicians, play chamber music, study eurhythmics, and rehearse as a full orchestra.  The camp will conclude with a short concert for family and friends.

Participants will reside at Johnson State College in beautiful Johnson, Vermont.  Students will share rooms in one of the central residence halls, which includes shared bathrooms on each floor and common spaces.  The small campus provides easy access to its excellent facilities, including: rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, Dibden Center for the Arts, cafeteria, dormitories, recreation areas, swimming pool, and social activity spaces.  The surrounding area is ideally suited to outdoor activities like picnics, hikes, and games.

Students must audition in order to be accepted into the program.  Intermediate and advanced students of any orchestral instrument are invited to audition with a polished piece, a scale, and should expect to sight-read.   

The cost for the camp is $650 (or $600 for early registration by March 6), and includes meals, lodging, all musical instruction, use of campus facilities, and recreational activities.  Scholarships are available and are based on need. 

Day Camp
The Green Mountain Youth Symphony will offer its music day camp at the Monteverdi Music School in Montpelier, 9am-3pm daily from Monday, July 19 - Friday, July 23.

Beginner and intermediate student musicians will work privately with professional musicians, play chamber music, study eurhythmics, and rehearse as a full orchestra.  The camp will conclude with a short concert for family and friends.
