Play in the Green Mountain Youth Symphony!

Auditions for the Fall 2026 semester of the Green Mountain Youth Symphony (GMYS) are right around the corner! Whether you’re a returning student or new to our program, auditions are your gateway to an inspiring season of music-making. Auditions are required for all musicians, whether new or returning. Please read the important information below before scheduling your audition!

 

Audition Dates

• Saturday, May 9th & Saturday, May 23rd, 2026

• Auditions available between 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

• At the Monteverdi Music School, Montpelier, VT

• ​Auditions are quick (less than 10 minutes) and will be heard by GMYS Artistic Director Bob and Executive Director Erin.

What to Prepare 

Each student should come ready to demonstrate their skills through:

• A polished solo piece that showcases your musicianship

• A scale of your choice

• Sight-reading skills, which will be provided at your audition

​

Instrument-Specific Requirements

For all instruments: Students should be able to read music. If you're just starting to learn traditional music notation reading, the Repertory Orchestra might be the right fit for you.​

​

Winds & Percussion:

• At least one year of playing experience is required.

​

Strings:

• Violin & Viola: for advanced placement, please prepare a three-octave scale with at least 3 sharps or flats.

• Cello & Bass: For advanced placement, prepare a four-octave scale.

How Placement Works
GMYS has three orchestras, and we carefully place students based on:

• Playing level

• Years of experience

• Age

​

Important Notes​

• The Fall semester runs from September to mid-December.

• Weekly rehearsals will be on Sundays starting in Fall 2026.

• Auditioning is not a commitment – you’re welcome to audition just to explore the opportunity.

• Under special circumstances, video auditions may be accepted. Please reach out to us for more info.
